90.6% of all paid parish employees hold only one ministerial position.

 

The majority of all paid parish employees are in maintenance, secretarial and business positions (60%), the largest being maintenance,

 

85% of parish ministers hold only one ministerial position.

 

The largest group of parish ministers is Music Director combined with Liturgical Musician (28.7%) followed by DRE (20.2%).

 

However, if DRE and Section Head are combined (31.2%), there are more Parish Ministers involved in religious education than there are musicians.

 

The fewest numbers of Parish Ministers are Liturgical Coordinators (6.3%) and RCIA Coordinators (9.3%). The report also shows that 12.8% are Youth Ministers.

 

68% of Parish Ministers are female. Women outnumber men in every parish ministerial position except music.

 

The majority of Parish Ministers are White (91%) and in the suburbs (86.1%). The majority of Black Parish Ministers are in the city (90.6%) and Hispanic ministers are in the suburbs(75%).

 

The majority of white Parish Ministers are female (71.9%). Black and Hispanic ministers are mostly women as well, but Black ministers have a slightly higher percentage of males than White parish ministers.

 

The average age of all paid parish staff is 51.9%. The average age of paid Parish Ministers is 44. The average age of "active priests in parishes" is approximately 56 and deacons are 65.

 

The majority of Parish Ministers are between the ages of 50 and 59 (27.8%) and the next largest group is between the ages of 40 and 49 year-olds (21.4%). Approximately 18% are between the ages of 60 and 69, meaning that 67% of all Parish Ministers are between the ages of 41 and 70.

 

50% of Parish Ministers have a Bachelors Degree and 34% have a Masters Degree.

 

Assessing all parish employees, there are more part-time (62.6%) than full-time (37.4%) employees. Similarly, there are more part-time Parish Ministers (59.7%) than full-time (40.3%).

 

Religious parish ministers (nuns/sisters) are employed predominantly full-time (55.2%). The majority of Lay Ministers (61.5%) are employed part-time as are Deacons (57.7%).

 

17% of parish ministers earn between $10,000 and $20,000 and another 17% earn between $30,001 and $40,000. The average hourly rate of pay for parish ministers is $28.52, but that includes musicians paid per Mass which can run as high as $125 per hour. (Note: The number of parishes reporting "Hourly Rates" (144) is significantly less than all paid staff reporting "Hourly Rate".

 

The majority of paid Parish Ministers are Lay (89.7%).
